European Parliament to vote on resolution against Akkuyu plant
BRUSSELS, Mar 11 (PRIME) -- The European Parliament plans to consider a resolution on Wednesday that includes a call for Turkey to stop construction of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant, as seen by PRIME in the document on Monday.
“Calls on the Turkish Government to halt its plans for the construction of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant; calls on Turkey to adhere to the Espoo Convention; asks the Turkish Government to involve, or at least consult, the governments of the neighboring countries, such as Greece and Cyprus, in relation to any further developments in the Akkuyu venture,” one of the points of the resolution read.
The European Parliament passed a similar resolution in 2017.
The Akkuyu plant is to comprise four units with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts each. Turkey expects to start the commercial use of the first unit in May 2024. The launch of the second unit for commercial use is expected in May 2025. Russian state nuclear power corporation Rosatom will construct the plant.
